Major hospitals & health facilities within 15 mins

John Hunter Hospital, at New Lambton Heights, is a major teaching hospital and the only Level 6 trauma centre between Sydney and the Queensland border. The John Hunter Children’s Hospital is the only NSW kid’s hospital outside of Sydney. On the same site there is also a private hospital, medical suites as well as a day surgery and elective surgery (Royal Newcastle) centre. Construction is on track for a new $90 million Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) facility that will be home to 450 researchers.

Less than 10 minutes away at Waratah is the Mater Misercordea Hospital, the region’s major cancer hospital. Even closer to Wallsend is the ?? bed Hunter Valley Private Hospital.
The former Wallsend Hospital is home to the region’s public health, family health and community health services as well as an aged care facility and after-hours medical service. Hunter New England Health Network has identified that there will be further expansion of existing community health facilities or new facilities at Wallsend to cater for future population growth.

Major sporting facilities and competitions

Wallsend has extensive sporting fields to host both local teams and tournaments in a range of sports. For example, Wallsend Touch is one of Australia’s largest and most successful touch football clubs. More than 4500 touch football games are played at Wallsend Touch each year as well as regular carnivals and tournaments.

The newly upgraded Ausgrid Stadium, home to the Newcastle Jets A-League football team and Newcastle Knights NRL team is only 10 minutes drive away as is the regional hockey centre.
