The Dragon’s Eye

There is a new speciality fashion shop in Wallsend Town, and yesterday I met with the owner Lenny to talk about the wonderful vision she has brought together in Nelson Street.

The Dragons Eye, at 95 Nelson Street is a tattoo-cross-rockabilly style clothing and accessories store. “We carry a good range of merchandise, including Sons of Anarchy and Ed Hardy. As far as I know we are the only stockists of those two brands in Newcastle” Lenny proudly told me. And she ought to be proud of her eclectic and unique little store. As soon as you enter the shop you are greeted with an amazing array of gorgeous fashion and accessories as well as Lenny’s huge smile – she is really focussed on customer service and goes well over and above to source unusual and one-off pieces for her customers.

From an extensive range of body jewellery for every conceivable part of the human body to a fantastic range of beautiful accessories and jewellery for yourself (or a really special and modern gift for a loved one).

“We see every type of customer in here” says Lenny. “From grandparents looking for that unique gift for a grandchild, to Rockabilly girls and guys, to Rollergirls, to Gen-Y’s looking for that something different to wear, to mums and dads who love to express their individuality and creativity in their clothes and accessories.”

The Dragon’s Eye stocks a really special and interesting range of dresses, handbags and shoes. I was delighted to find a gorgeous pair of hand-painted Ed Harry heels, and the handbags were so individual and fun. The tattoo design stockings were fantastic – slip them on to give yourself instant leg tattoos!

I had such a great time exploring Lenny’s new store The Dragon’s Eye. Lenny was incredibly helpful and a delightful presence in the store – I hope you go and check out her great range of merchandise soon!

Food for Thought

What a wet old day it is in Wallsend Town today! I don’t know about you, but in weather like this I crave my mum’s Roast Lamb with crunchy golden roast potatoes, yummy carrots & peas and LOTS of gravy!

Kevin and the guys at Farnhams Butchery on the corner of Nelson Street and Kemp streets in Wallsend have just the ticket – Kevin has sourced grass fed lamb from Cowra that is both succulent and delicious. Lamb has such sweet and delicate flavours, and when roasted with garlic and rosemary – well let’s just say “OH YEAH!”. From $18, the hormone-free legs of lamb at Farnhams are also an economical dinner for my family, and I am already looking forward to leftovers smooshed onto fresh bread for lunch tomorrow!

Here is my favorite recipe for mouth-watering, sweet and juicy Roast Lamb:

Method
Preheat the oven to 200C.
Cut slits approx 1cm deep in the skin of the lamb randomly.
Push garlic and rosemary sprigs into these slits.
Smother in lots of olive oil and salt and pepper.

Put all your favorite veges into the baking dish with the lamb and season well.
Put into a hot oven for 60 minutes.
Check the vegetables and take out if cooked. Cover with foil.
Turn temperature down to 180C and turn leg of lamb over and return to oven for another 30 minutes.
Take out of oven and leave to rest covered with foil for 30 minutes before carving.

Gravy
Pour as much of the fat off as you can while retaining the juices on the bottom of the tray. Heat the pan and then add about 2 tablespoons of flour. Stir on medium heat till the flour and the pan drippings combine and colour. Continue to cook adding stock or water as necessary to get the thickness of gravy you like.

Put vegetables back into the oven to bring back to temperature for 5 minutes. Just before you serve up, tip the juices from the resting meat into the gravy and bring back to the boil. Check for seasoning.

Serve the meat with the hot vegetables and hot gravy. ♥

Good morning Wallsend! Well we are still being subjected to unseasonably wet February weather… but rather than dwell on the cloudy skies I am looking at the February cloud’s silver lining of VALENTINES DAY! As I am sure you are aware, Valentines Day falls in just a few days – on February 14 which is a Tuesday this year.

Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate love – new, old, romantic, platonic and everything in between. One of the most lovely ways to express your feelings is by giving flowers. However, not all flower arrangements are created equally and not all types of flowers are appropriate. So what should be a joyous, romantic and fun-filled day can sometimes turn into a nerve-racking experience for both men and women.

Grabbing a bouquet at the corner flower stand will always work in a pinch, but to really captivate someone special in your life, head to your local florist and put some thought into it.

Before you order a dozen roses and call it a day, reconsider. Although roses are standard for Valentine’s Day, is “standard” the message you really want to give to your loved one?
